...Wow. Just wow. how do you photoshop like that I have absolutely no idea at all. I love the sky especially, and then how you combined those images together to create something spectacular, focusing on that... uh brown thing in the middle, sorry I don't really know what it is XD Maybe you could explain it a little bit more? Well anyways I think that brown machine thingy looks plain awesome, and also that your title of the deviation actually fits it well. So anyways on to the point that this is pretty epic you should know that :D , I hope to see more of this stuff from you.
What do you think?

Well, I suppose I do. To me, the mark of a talented artist is being able to seamlessly combine various elements from different sources into a cohesive, polished, work. As you know, I've been watching you for a long time; and I know you're well-versed in a myriad of different applications. Tons. I know a few myself, and it's not often I see something and I don't know which programs were used to make which piece of the image. I can usually see a piece of art and be able to break it down in the sense of how it was made (this was made in C4D, this part Illustrator, this part Photoshop, etc.).

I'm always particularly interested when the artist's proficiency with their software and their skill sets with integration leave me asking, "Okay, how the hell did they do that?" You do this to me a lot. So a couple questions about the workflow—and if you can humor me—I would greatly appreciate it.

•The main render, I'm seeing pieces that are "cut out". Achieving faux-wire-frame look. I'm curious how you did that, were the polys simply deleted, or did you boolean the areas of negative space?
•Assuming from the lighting (which is very well done by the way, was that a huge lighting rig?), I'm thinking the 3D typography was done in C4D as well?
•The "wires" or "cords" hanging off the main object—I see these sometimes in exterior/architectural 3D work, is that C4D or post?
•On the first version of this piece, I notice you used some blue glow "tubes", how much of that was post/PS work, or was it just good materials and modeling?
•Finally, do you use the stock final render in C4D or something else like V-Ray?

I apologize for the long post. :(

Ok. I'll try to answer as best I can (and if anything needs clarifying any further, just let me know!) :)

:bulletblack: The cutouts are simply deleted polys. The main shape (based from a cube) is duplicated and placed into an atom array - then the original has some polys deleted resulting in the end product.
:bulletblack: The lighting is just a basic sky with shadows set to hard and time of day at 10am (8th September to be precise!) The three lamps on the object actually had a sphere on each with a luminance only channel material, off-white at 160% (although in the final render you can only just notice the light coming from them anyway!) And yes, the text is created in C4D also.
:bulletblack: The 'wires' were done in post - using pen tool and stroke along path using a 3px standard brush. The highlights were done by selecting pixels and using standard soft brush to just add highlights here and there.
:bulletblack: The blue neon tubes were all C4D - using a path spline and a circle spline then placing these into a sweep nurb and adding a bright blue luminance only material.
:bulletblack: I always render in C4D (I don't actually own V-Ray!) and I always try to render using global illumination and ambient occlusion - which can be a memory hog, but usually always gives pleasing results!

Hope this breakdown helps you out J! :)

You're effin awesome! Thank you so much for that, I was getting closer on the workflow techniques, but this post made my life so much easier! The AO is something I need to use more, my computer always has ridiculously long render times but I always like the noise and more "painted" effect it produces. Everything else, I know how to do and it makes perfect sense. You are a gentleman and a scholar. Thanks again for taking the time to break it down for me, these are all things I wanted to do myself, but was unclear how to go about learning the techniques. Life saver! :eager:
